Key advances in hearing aid technology

Manufacturers are constantly producing better and better hearing aids. Digital technology has allowed for much more rapid growth of hearing aid technology than was ever possible in the past. There are some exciting advances that make it much easier to be happy with your hearing aids.

  • Automatic noise reduction technology: In a noisy situation, the hearing aid automatically detects the presence of noise and helps reduce unwanted non-speech sounds. If the hearing aid has directional microphones, it also focuses maximum hearing toward the person you are looking at.

  • Advanced feedback (hearing aid squeal) cancellation technology; whistling sounds are rarely a problem.

  • Open-fit hearing aids that allow for more ventilation and reduced feeling of fullness in the ear.

  • Smaller and more discreet hearing aids, even for more advanced hearing loss.

  • Data logging allows us to see in detail what your hearing aid is doing and to more quickly understand how to help you.

  • Easy telephone use.

  • Wireless connection to your hearing aid from your cell phone, land line phone, television or computer.

  • Left and right hearing aids can work together to communicate what is happening in one aid to the other. For instance, changing the volume in one ear will also change the volume in the other.

Types of hearing aids

There are four main types of hearing aids, named according to how they fit your ear:

  1. Behind-the-Ear (BTE), from regular size to miniature.
  2. In-the-Ear (ITE) also known as Full Shell because it fills most of the ear
  3. In-the-Canal (ITC), a smaller hearing aid
  4. Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC), the smallest type of hearing aid

There are variations and in-between steps within the above categories. For instance, behind-the-ear hearing aids come in various sizes and shapes. The choice of which style of hearing aid is right for you is based mainly on the extent of your hearing loss, any medical conditions of your ear, your dexterity and your personal preference.
